Daylilies are a favorite of horticulturalists because of their attractive flowers. There are more than 35,000 daylily cultivars! The flowers of some species are edible and are used in Chinese cuisine, known as gum jum or golden needles. They are used in hot and sour soup, daylily soup, Buddha's delight, and moo shu pork. In olden China, dayliles were worn in the girdle of a pregnant woman to cause the birth of a boy. In Europe, they were believed to cure melancholy by causing the loss of memory.
