The sunflower originated in South and Central America, and migrated north, most likely due to the migration of Spanish conquistadors who then brought the sunflowers back to Europe in the 1500s. In many folkloric traditions, sunflowers are seen as lucky flowers. Planting them around your home and garden will bring good fortune, and if you pick a sunflower at sunset and wear it on your person, good luck will be yours the following day.
